Sounds like only the first stage of the starter motor is coming in, The starter should turn slowly until the starter dog is engaged in the flywheel ring gear then the solenoid should provide full power to the starter. Contrary to popular belief, rotating mass does not consume energy. The starter motor spins but the solenoid would not engage the gear into the flywheel. When I try to start my 1996 Yamaha WaveRaider 760, it makes a whining sound and sounds like the starter is running (or something is turning inside) but never engages the engine to turn it over. Solution #1: Check the rest of the electrical system for the correct voltage, grounds, and wiring. Provided that either plate is fully-engaged with the rest of the running gear, you should be able to turn the converter two times because the converter is matched at this point with the pump. Replace it with a matched pressure plate and have the flywheel machined to the correct spec. I would pull the starter and bench test it. If the starter does not turn the engine over, shut off starter immediately. As a result, the clutch disc tends to continue turning with the engine and attempts to drive the transmission. I have adjusted the valves and can see the slight movement on the intake (lower) valve which I think is for the compression release. This is especially prevalent with intermittent problems where sometimes the starter will work fine and then other times it will spin freely. When the starter spins but does not engage, try rotating the crank about 90 degrees and then try the starter again. Removing it is a snap with an impact wrench and the proper flywheel puller. If you are out and need to start the engine, you can disconnect the wires from terminals B and C and hook them together and you will be able to bypass the slave solenoid all together and it should work.
